Brand new for 2006, we’re proud to announce the all aluminum monocoque lightweight.
The chassis is assembled mostly with the use of aluminum structural rivets along with panel adhesives and some conventional screws. The resulting structure is extremely light yet rigid and allows for the use of most popular 4 cylinder engines including DOHC when mated to a RWD gearbox. High output motorcycle engines are also an excellent candidate to power this car. Shipped as a series of prepunched and preformed components, the chassis can be built in a matter of hours instead of months as in a traditional steel framed Lotus 7 inspired car
There is no welding involved. Pedals, roll bar, wishbones and hub carriers are already welded. Most of the car can be assembled with general hand tools…although power tools will make it MUCH easier.
This kit was designed and engineered in the UK by Robin Hood Sportscars. Thorough testing has been done and their car passed SVA testing and is legal for the road. To further show the strength of the design a Jaguar V12 was installed in a larger version of the kit.
We’re here to help you every step of the way. Too often “kit cars” are abandoned after a short while, either due to competing circumstances or poorly supported kits. We’ll help you every step of the way to make sure that building your own car will be as rewarding as driving it.

FAQ:
Q. What engines work in the Lightweight? A. In the UK, the Zetec engine is the most popular. The lightweight has been designed to be universal and almost any 4 cyl. engine can be installed. There is enough height for Double overhead cam fuel injected engines. Motorcycle engines are also becoming popular and the Lightweight lends itself easily to this application. You DO NOT need a high performance engine. The concept is a lightweight nimble performer weighing about 1000 lbs completed. Power to weight ratio is the key.
Q. I want to use a donor available in the USA, not the Ford Sierra? A. The pinto/Mustang II front spindles bolt right into the supplied front wishbones. These are readily available cheap in scrap yards, and new Forged spindles are available thru us or most race supply houses. The Pinto/Mustang front end is the most popular Hot Rod set up and is also common in racecars. Rotors with either Ford or GM bolt patterns are available. With the completeness of this kit you neally do not need a full donor car to build with
Q. How about the differential? A. The lightweight is an Independant Rear Suspension car. They use the Sierra differential in the UK. The Merkur is the same. They are readily available here out of either an XR4Ti or Scorpio. Modifications to the rear of the body are easy and will allow most any Japanese or European IRS differential to be installed. We will assist you during your build.
Q. Will I fit in this car? A. The lightweight as about 4 more inches of legroom as compared to a conventional "Locost" frame. So taller people will be comfortable. Those that eat a lot of doughnuts and cheeseburgers may have trouble though.
Q. Will I be able to register this car for the road? A. DMV's have become much more aware of Kit cars in the recent years. Every state has instructions for registering them. Your kit will be serial numbered and have a chassis plate and Manufacturers documentation. You should have title for your donor car and the VIN tag. Make a file and keep EVERY receipt for parts purchased and outside labor performed. A complete file makes the process go much easier. In most states it is not a difficult process, but does take some time.
Q. Can I buy it cheaper directly from the UK? A. Probably not. The factory price is is for a kit collected with a pickup truck in loose pieces one day a month at Notts, UK. Our kits are specially designed for the North American Market. There is significantly higher cost for our Left hand drive Kit, including the proper lighting, chassis set up and safety glass. The crated kit weighs as much as a car so there is significant freight. Fortunately the crate has been designed to also provide the materials to make the jig to build the body on. So you can start building as soon as the kit arrives. So, with currency conversion, upgrades, freight, taxes, legal and duty, broker fees etc. your landed cost would be about the same. RHS has set us up as the sole distributor in this country for this reason. An individual trying to do it on their own will be very frustrated and would pay more in the end. This does not promote the hobby and get kits out in the field.
Q. I have seen kit car companies come and go, and am afraid to be left out in the cold with no support. A. You are covered several ways. RHS has been in business over 20 years and sells more kits than anyone else. There is a strong owners group in the UK, and you will have the opportunity to join it with a kit purchase. In fact the first years dues are paid with the purchase of the kit. Lightweight Sportscars/Coveland has been in the British Service business for many years and kit cars are only a portion of our business. Unlike others that have come and gone, we do not rely on these sales to stay in business. We are importing because we like this market, and think it fits our long term plan. We also have a dedicated builder's site that will promote communication between our customers, and will help form a RHOCaR North America.
